Amazing Experience
Starting off, I will give a brief warning as this novel includes mentions of suicide and underage sex. These two themes perfectly explain and contradict the title but nevertheless they both play important roles in the story. The reason the novel first stood out to me amongst the tens of options provided was frankly the fact that I’d heard of the title before. But after reading the premise on the back I knew that I’d found my match for the semester. In particular, the themes of adolescence and haunting melancholy and the unique style of narration were interesting to me. I was looking forward to reading about a group of teenage boys trying to decipher the strange ministrations of the five sisters across the street. You really get to feel as if you yourself are a part of the neighbourhood, the boys’ analysis of the girls at times interjected by random mentions of the infidelity of the couple down the street or the latest adolescent gossip. Little did I know that in addition to these expectations being met, I would also be lovingly slapped across the face by the wholesome moments of familial scenes, school dances and the sharing of retro music. While getting to read a cult classic, I was hoping that it would open my eyes to the differences but also similarities of being a teen in the 1970s and now the 2020s. Consider my eyes opened and my curiosities satisfied.
